As the board members were divided on the issue, chief minister Ashok Gehlot urged all to create awareness among the people before embarking on any such decision. Sources said Gehlot wanted better awareness on cheetah and other wildlife issues before arriving on a consensus.
In March, Ramesh had assured that cheetah would be brought to the state. He discussed this with Gehlot and the two had talked about surveying the grasslands near Rawatbhata in Hadauti as an alternate site for the cheetah instead of Shahgarh Bulge in Jaisalmer.
The ministry after a survey by the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) had chosen Kuno-Palpur and Nauradehi in Madhya Pradesh and the Shahgarh Bulge in Jaisalmer for introducing the Cheetah -- now extinct from our country. While MP has moved on with the project, Rajasthan stands undecided due to opposition from oil and national gas exploration companies which feel that presence of cheetah may be dangerous.
