But anyone tempted to dismiss America's state as a basket case when it comes to environmental policy was forced into a rethink last week when Governor Sean Parnell signed off one of the world's most ambitious renewable energy policies.
Under the new legislation, Alaska has set itself a target of generating half of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025, outstripping California's high-profile target of generating a third of its electricity from renewables by 2020 and the EU's plans to source 20 per cent of its power from renewables by the same date.
The target, which is set out in House Bill 306, is expected to be met primarily through an expansion in hydroelectric power, although the state government is yet to provide a detailed proposal of how it will meet the goal. Read the full report here.
