Dr. Bilal made the call in Dar es Salaam yesterday at the launch of Mwalimu Nyerere Professorial Chair on Environment and Climate Changes as part of the University of Dar es Salaam's 50th anniversary celebrations.
He said the idea for establishing the chair had come at the right time when the world was confronted with various forms of environmental challenges such as pollution, land degradation and climate changes.
“These challenges require collective efforts in information generation, information sharing, policy formation and interventions at different levels. It is such a chair that can provide a platform to coordinate such activities," he said.
“We may console ourselves today that the threat of nuclear destruction has receded, but we cannot be sure that we are not on the path to self-extinction via environmental mismanagement," the vice-president warned. Read the full report here.
