On Tuesday, senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said he was shocked that the plant has been granted conditional clearance. “There are issues of safety but more importantly there are issues of environment and a conditional clearance given by the environment ministry is not enough. Mr Jairam Ramesh is on a mission mode and is trying to implement policies in that mode. Therefore, I was quite surprised, indeed shocked when I found that he has given conditional clearance of the plant. It definitely calls for a re-look," Mr Sinha said.
Clearance for the proposed 10,000 MW (1650 MW x 4) nuclear power park being set up in co-operation with the French energy company Areva was given on November 26, barely a week ahead of President Nicholas Sarkozy's visit.
