Business groups here backed his decision to impose a moratorium on any fresh industrial investment in Chandrapur which has been declared a critically polluted area. The ban will be only lifted after concrete measures are taken to reduce pollution.
President of MIDC Industries Association at Chandrapur, Madhusudhan Roongta, strongly flayed his transfer, alleging it was prompted by the mining lobby. "Ramesh had rightly barred fresh industrial investment in Chandrapur so that pollution could be controlled," he said.
Others had a different view. "Industrialists are happy because they feel the new minister may understand our viewpoint. The incumbent Jayanti Natarajan is expected to not be a crusader like Ramesh. A fresh look is also expected into the go and no-go areas policy that had hampered coal mining," said Govind Daga who has stakes in iron and steel businesses in the region. Read the full report here.
