Or this scenario. You're driving to the snowfi elds for a weekend break and your car computer alerts you that you have another 50 kilometres before you need to repower. It also tells you the next recharge station is at a McDonald's outlet on the highway ahead.
You pull in and a robotic arm removes your spent battery and replaces it with one that's been charged up by solar panels. It costs much less than you used to pay for petrol and has produced no carbon emissions.
This is the future — and it's not far off, says Greg Hunt, executive offi cer of the South East Councils Climate Change Alliance, set up to advise eight councils, including Frankston and Mornington Peninsula, on their response to climate change.
Mr Hunt (who is not the Flinders MP and opposition climate change spokesman of the same name) recently attended a motor show and found almost every major auto manufacturer was exhibiting an electric car. Read the full report here.
