China's ban on plastic bags proves successful

On June 1, 2008, in a bid to reduce ‘white pollution' the Chinese government banned the production of ultra-thin bags under 0.025 mm. thick. Supermarkets were told to stop handing out free plastic bags and to encourage people to carry recyclable shopping bags. It led to the closure of the country's biggest plastic bag manufacturer.

Although the ban is often disregarded at roadside stalls and small shops, one cannot deny that the move will go a long way in inculcating a sense of responsibility and environmental consciousness in the public mindset.
