The ambitious scheme hit a roadblock recently after the Centre struck down plans for reclamation which, according to state officials, is the only cost-effective way to construct the vital corridor.
Whether Mumbai will have a coastal road built on reclaimed land in select areas or it will have costly bridges on stilts or pillars similar to the existing sea link will be decided on Friday, an official said.
"If the project gets the nod, it will pave the way for a garlanded link from Versova to Bandra and then from Worli to Cuffe Parade and later from Colaba to Sewri. Significantly, there will be no need to pay toll," the official added. The link will also eliminate the need to build elevated corridors like the Pedder Road flyover and high-speed bridges along the Western Express Highway between Bandra and Dahisar.
