In the 1960s, an open contour canal was built in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve under the Parambikulam Aliyar Project. The canal, which runs for almost 50 km., of which 45 km. falls within the reserve, is a death trap for wildlife. Frequented by deer, elephants, tigers, leopards and even sloth bears especially during the dry season, the canal's dimensions make it almost impossible for fallen animals to be rescued. Members of the Tamil Nadu Green Movement have been pushing for an inspection of the canal but to no avail. Recommendations have been passed to make provisions for wild animals to cross the canal, to make the slopes scalable and to install railings to prevent animals from falling in. While the authorities say they are working on creating platforms for wildlife to safely access water, there has been no progress yet.
