During an exclusive interaction with journalists from United Nations Environment Programme workshop in New Delhi, Ramesh told KNS, “Once Asia's largest fresh water body, Wullar Lake today has shrunk into a patch of green. It is a water body and not a forest. The trees had been planted in mid '80's due to reason of flash floods. But now they are being uprooted due to another reason. Restoration of the water body is of paramount importance."
“We have earmarked Rs 400 crore for the restoration of the Lake and first phase has been already sanctioned. Ecological restoration of the water body is going to be a gigantic task," he added.
He also announced that about 10 thousand families settled inside world famous Dal Lake in Srinagar city have to be relocated. “Otherwise cleaning the Lake will be of no use," Ramesh said. Read the full report here.
