Any open space in the city falls under the purview of the Coastal Regulation Zone 3 (CRZ), with no scope for any commercial development. But the notification allows open spaces to be developed for 'public interest services' such as mining, atomic energy, natural gas, gardens, parks, et al.
At a press conference on Saturday , Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh told Mumbaikars that all open spaces in the city have now been brought under the purview of CRZ 3; this was not stipulated in the CRZ notification of 1991. Read the full report here.
