According to Pradeep Khanna, Chief Conservator of Forests, each gene pool will have 10 to 20 animals and two of these gene pools will be created in nearby zoos. The state government claims that creating these pools outside the protected Gir environs will ensure the future of the species even if the Gir population faces any kind of biological, climatic or human-caused catastrophe. The gene pools will also be a breeding ground for the species. The Central Government and wildlife biologists, however, continue to emphasise that it would be preferable if some Asiatic lions were shifted from Gir to Palpur-Kuno in Madhya Pradesh.
