Half Of India’s Groundwater Contaminated With Poisonous Substances

Contaminated districts extend across the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, all of which exceed the limit of 1.5 mg/l of fluoride as stipulated by the Bureau of Indian Standards during the investigation. Once these contaminants enter the groundwater they cannot be removed and will remain within aquifers permanently. This poses a major setback to all efforts by water pollution boards and committees in India who have failed to control effluent discharge into entire water basins.

Furthermore, 113 districts across 15 states have been contaminated with heavy metals, lead, cadmium and chromium.
