Armed with reports from Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and state pollution control board, the state environment minister Ajay Singh Yadav told Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh that before entering Delhi, the biological oxygen demand (BOD) of Yamuna water ranged from 1.1 to 2.7mg/ litre against the permissible limit of 3mg/ litre in 2010. He claimed that Ammonium Nitrogen was reported as 'nil'.
"This shows that all parameters are within permissible limits at village Palla in Sonipat. However, the water we receive at Badarpur is contaminated. Discharge of untreated or partially treated effluents into the river through 22 drains in Delhi pollutes the river. We have demanded that an effluent treatment plant be set up at Badarpur. Delhi should bear the entire cost of this plant," Yadav told Times City.
He said the BOD level in the river water at Badarpur border was between 12 and 30mg/ litre against the permissible limit of 3 mg/ litre. "The quality of water is poor and after treating it we are supplying it to people in Gurgaon and its adjoining areas," Yadav said. Read the full report here.
