History Repeating Itself?

"We may soon be witnessing the second large-scale extermination of wolves in the West," said Suzanne Stone of Defenders of Wildlife, an organisation that fights for the protection of wolves.

Montana and Idaho were the first states to witness hunting and trapping, and were soon joined by Minnesota, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

As top predators, wolves play a key role in maintaining the health of ecosystems. When they were re-introduced into the Yellowstone National Park, forests damaged by overgrazing by elk recovered. Elk herds responded to the return of wolves with what scientists called “the ecology of fear," moving into deeper forests rather than browsing along streams or out in the open. Songbird populations improved after bushes and trees returned along the rivers.
