The guest of honour is Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State (Independent charge), of Ministry of Environment and Forests. The Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Environment & Forests will be present at the function in his capacity as Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIFM and the Director General of Forests & Special Secretary to the Government of India will also be present during the convocation function in his capacity as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors of the IIFM. The function is scheduled to begin at 10.00 am on Monday.
The flagship programme of the institute, Post Graduate Diploma in Forestry Management (PGDFM) was launched in 1988. The programme has been duly approved by AICTE, recognized by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) as equivalent to masters programme of any Indian University. The two years programme structure of PGDFM is divided into six class room terms, field work and summer internship project with sponsoring organizations. In the year 2007, PGDFM programme was restructured with the introduction of three specializations viz. Conservation & Livelihood, Environmental Management and Development Management to cater to the emerging needs of sector.
So far, 21 batches of PGDFM passed out from the institute and all of them were awarded diplomas in seven convocations held previously by the institute. The 22nd batch of PGDFM will be awarded diplomas in this eighth convocation. The present batch had students from different backgrounds, 46% engineers, 19% science, 6% commerce, 10% arts, 13% agriculture and remaining 6% from other backgrounds. 35% of the batch had previous work experience.
The eighth convocation on Monday will make a platform for the get together of all these graduates who have already placed with different organizations. Apart from the parents of the diploma awardees, it is expected that the members of the Board of Governors of IIFM, senior officials of the Union Ministry of Environment & Forests, State Forest Departments, leading corporate houses and NGOs will also attend the convocation function.
