The incident came into focus after an official complaint was lodged by Wildlife activist Diya Bannerjee to the top authorities of National Conservation Tiger Authority (NTCA), Ministry of Environment and Forest and State forest department.
According to PK Sen, Padamshree award-winning wildlife expert and former Director of Project tiger, “capturing a tiger from within the forest is illegal — the action of Field Director (FD) is arbitrary and whimsical — Wildlife protection rules clearly says that no animal and more so an endangered species like the Bengal tiger, can be captured from the forest unless it is sick or injured and in need of treatment."
Justifying his action, Subrat Mukherjee FD, however, said, “the tiger had to be caught from within the forest, in view of certain compulsions. It was known to have a history of mauling and straying into the villages". Read the full report here.
