Participating in the third meeting of the UN Secretary General's high-level panel on global sustainability being held in Helsinki , environment minister Jairam Ramesh also stressed on the need for developing a new indicator to measure sustainable development.
Making the argument, Ramesh said, "The question of energy access is at the heart of every discussion on sustainability, especially for developing countries, where disturbingly large share of citizens do not have access to modern and clean sources of energy."
The issue of providing energy access for all while ensuring sustainability continues to be a vexed issue. One that Ramesh is familiar with in the domestic context. "The challenge before us is to ensure that this access happens rapidly, while ensuring that the sustainability related constraints are not violated. This requires tremendous innovation in both technology and policy choices that we make," Ramesh said. Read the full report here.
