The report said that about 20% of 8,000 Dongria Kondh tribal people live around the project area. "An impact on such a significant fraction of the population of the community will have repercussions on the community's very survival," the panel said.
Vedanta's proposal to mine bauxite in Orissa state's Niyamgiri Hills has been awaiting federal environmental clearance for almost 20 months.
"We haven't yet studied the report. Once we read it and discuss it with the state government, we will decide on the future course of action," said Mukesh Kumar, chief operating officer of Vedanta's Lanjigarh refinery, which would use the bauxite from Niyamgiri Hills. Read the full report here.
