Paraguay, on the other hand, topped the rankings, making it the greenest place on Earth to manufacture and drive an electric car. According to the study, in India and China, the heavy coal-based generation translates into electric cars with emissions similar to that of traditional petrol vehicles. A fully electric car in India generates emissions comparable to a 20 MPG (U.S. gallon) petrol vehicle. In Paraguay, a similar car produces emissions comparable to a 218 MPG petrol vehicle.
Lindsay Wilson, lead author of the report, said, “Because EVs are more energy-intensive to manufacture, and are expected to have lower lifetime mileage, their manufacturing emissions per kilometre are considerably greater. By accounting for these differences, this work also highlights that as vehicles become increasingly low-carbon, manufacturing emissions matter more and more." The writing on the wall is clear… India needs a coal-de-addiction programme.
