Most dairies in the country stock these animals in overcrowded, unhygienic and grossly violated spaces. In a much needed attempt to alleviate and address this suffering of the dairy animals and bring in some law and order to make this industry as ethical and humane as possible, a new national code of practice for dairy farming, the National Code of Practices for Management of Dairy Animals in India, has been launched, that will give more ground and strength to addressing the dairy animals' suffering. This comes as a big relief and is a landmark step in the path of animal welfare in India.
This move materialised owing to the efforts of the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), World Animal Protection who played an invaluable advisory role along with National Dairy Development Board, the Animal Husbandry Department, the Animal Welfare Board of India. Several individual dairy farmers also were useful in helping chart out the guidelines for the code.
“This code is a ground breaking achievement, but this is just the beginning. We are calling on dairy farmers to take action and implement these new practices.", Mike Baker, CEO of World Animal Protection said.
Dr. A.K. Srivastava, Director and Vice-Chancellor, NDRI says, “The code will go some way towards helping address these problems, benefiting not only dairy animals but our entire society, helping both animals and people live healthier, happier lives."
