The conference will deliberate upon various aspects of Indian ornithology and would offer a platform to share the experiences of researchers from India and abroad. It will also encompass a wide range of people who include scientists, academics, protected area managers, policy-makers and administrators from government departments, and NGOs involved in ornithological studies and conservation.

India with just a little less than 1 per cent of the world's total land and sea area accounts for nearly 8 per cent of global biodiversity. The country harbours about 1,300 species of birds and ranks among the top ten countries in bird species diversity. In addition, BirdLife International has identified seven Endemic Bird Areas in the country making the Indian subcontinent a critical landscape for global avian diversity.
Though Indian ornithology today is an established field of research, it lacked a common platform in the past to bring together bird biologists and conservationists to review the progress of ornithological research in the country. To fill this gap, SACON proposed and organised the first international conference on Indian ornithology in 2011.
Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, Coimbatore, is a national institution dedicated to the cause of conservation of India's biodiversity with focus on birds. It was established in 1990 as a Centre of Excellence of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. SACON is located at Anaikatty, 25 km. away from Coimbatore city in the sylvan and serene setting of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu.
