Jairam Ramesh Says 'Yes' To Junagadh's Girnar Ropeway

The project will provide a convenient mode of transport to pilgrims who want to go from Bhavnath Taleti to Ambaji Temple on Mount Girnar in Junagadh. The go-ahead was given last week.
The project was stuck in a logjam due to concerns raised bynaturalists that the ropeway passed through the roosting sites of around 69 vultures on the hill in the Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary. Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh has taken these concerns into consideration and given the go- ahead with six specific conditions.
The conditions will have to be fulfilled by the Gujarat forest department in the next two months. The Gujarat government has to explore the option of realigning the ropeway, preferably along the Datar side, so that it does not cut across the prime vulture habitat. Read the full report here.
