"Both places have common visitors. In fact, the zoo also has several historical places that could do with some highlighting. The Purana Qila is with the ministry of culture and we will have to work out a proposal that will be acceptable to all parties. The idea occurred to me during my visit to the zoo and we will have to flesh it out," said Ramesh. The minister said that integration would also help the zoo with more space since it is cramped in an area of just 200 acres.
Ramesh added that under the new master plan that is expected to be ready within the next three months, a separate society was being set up for the zoo that would manage its finances for better maintenance and development. "The zoo earns about Rs 5 crore each year in ticket sales. The money should remain with the zoo and the society will ensure that it is utilized in the best possible manner. An area of 5 acres has also been identified near the zoo for a visitors information centre," he said. Read the full report here.
