The ministers' comments come barely weeks after former environment minister Jairam Ramesh was given the rural development portfolio in a cabinet reshuffle, after he locked horns with several political leaders and industrialists on a string of land and environment issues.
Known as a tough taskmaster, Ramesh set new standards for industrialists to comply that often brought him into conflict with them. Significantly, it also put environment issues in the spotlight during his tenure.
He also gave teeth to the environment ministry, not hesitating in blocking the multi-million industrial and mining projects, in case of non-compliance with ecological laws. Read the full report here.
