Photocredit: Govardhan Meena/Sanctuary Asia.Goverdhan Meena, Sanctuary Asia's Kids for Tigers (KFT) Co-ordinator in Ranthambhore, reported that the students were thrilled to be able to see two tigers and an abundance of other wildlife including spotted deer and snakes. The childrens' experiences in the national park were organized by Sanctuary Asia, KFT, and AIRCEL, to commemorate World Environment Day, a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) annual event designed to stimulate worldwide awareness of the need for positive environmental action.
In addition to observing wildlife, the children collected plastic bags and bottles from a roadside, and help to clear trash from Bawri, an ancient water well. A wildlife drawing competition was held in the village of Ranwal, and the day's events closed with a wholehearted pledge by the children to plant two trees during the rainy season, and to help protect wildlife. The World Environment Day events in Ranthambhore were typical of many other Sanctuary Asia Kids for Tigers events around the country in recent months, designed to engage young people, and their teachers, schools, and communities, in learning about the natural environment, and in stewardship activities.
