The activists had also written to the Union minister for environment and forests Jayanthi Natarajan demanding closure of the dump yard and to also carry out a prior inspection by a Central team of experts to ascertain field facts.
According to Anna University scientist and a Kodungaiyur resident Dr Nagarathinam, the dumping yard has made the neighbouring areas of north Chennai toxic thus creating unsuitable living conditions.
Welcoming the chief minister's announcement of cleaning up the city in a span of three months, Perambur legislator A. Soundarajan of CPI(M) said his party had already raised the issue in the Assembly.
“We are pinning hopes that the new government would sort out the health hazards and ensure steps to protect the biodiversity", he said. Read the full report here.
