The international body decided to take the lion-tailed macaque off the list owing to the positive efforts of the state governments to ensure its protection. The conservation status of wild primate species, which are found in 91 countries, is periodically monitored by IUCN's Red List. The lion-tailed macaque is threatened by habitat fragmentation, conflicts with humans and lack of understanding of primate behaviour. The latest top 25 endangered primates include ape, monkey and lemur species from Tanzania, Ghana, Madagascar, Indonesia, the Ivory Coast, China, South America and Vietnam. Fifty per cent of India's 43 primate sub-species face a severe threat today and the CBD is attempting to find new ways to reduce this biodiversity loss.
