Maharashrta Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has said that action against illegal construction does not always imply demolition.
Earlier, Union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh had on June 10 asked the Maharashtra government to take action against Lavasa Lake City project promoters - Hindustan Construction Company - for starting construction on 681 hectares of land without obtaining environmental clearance.
An expert appraisal panel of the ministry has also recommended a conditional clearance to the hill city project located near Pune.
In a letter to the Maharashtra Government, the Union Ministry said that during an appraisal of request for green clearance for the development of 2,000 hectares Hill Station Township "it was found that constructions/developments in 681 hectare area was in progress without obtaining prior environmental clearance."
