Even as late as the early 19th century, the tigers in the wild in India numbered around 40,000. Today, its number has dwindled to less than 2,000. Habitat loss and poaching are two major causes for its decline. After its initial success, Project Tiger appears to have lost steam mainly because it failed to keep pace with the changing times.
