Marine Frontiers, the company which supplies speedboats to Mumbai police, is under the Environment ministry scanner for violating Coastal Regulated Zone (CRZ) guidelines, even as it battles allegations of using political clout to bag the State Government contract.
Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has written to Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), after it was revealed the company built a yard near Dharamtar creek, in an area that comes under CRZ.
Sources in State bureaucracy said eyebrows are being raised over the State's contract with the company, whose director is Raigad MLC Jayant Patil's son Nrupal.
Sources said post 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, Patil had raised the issue to coastal safety in the State Assembly, allegedly saying police need bullet-proof speedboats with latest features. Later, Marine Frontiers was awarded the contract, but there is no evidence that Patil played a role to benefit the firm. Read the full report here.
