“It can't be overemphasized that the Philippines is very vulnerable to climate change, and Albay is also one of the areas vulnerable to disasters like typhoons," Josefino Comiso, a Filipino-American scientist at the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration, told a multi-sectoral assembly at the Albay Astrodome here on June 17.
Comiso, director of the Earth Science Department at the Goddard Space Flight Center, is a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former US Vice President Al Gore.
Comiso started his lecture with a video presentation of his research on the changes in temperature in the Arctic. On the average, he says, the Earth's temperature increased by about 1 degree Centigrade during the last century.
“In areas where the warming is really high, there are lots of vulnerabilities that can affect mankind like the Arctic ice that can impact on the oceanography of the region," said Comiso, a native of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, who studied physics at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, and pursued his master's in Physics at the Florida State University and his doctorate at the University of California at Los Angeles.
