Park Registers Case After Elephant Deaths

The move follows the announcement last week that Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh had ordered an investigation into a number of elephant deaths in the vicinity of the Kaziranga National Park, and comes as the probe begins.

According to Calcutta's Telegraph newspaper, Ramesh demanded strong action against any guilty party which emerged from the investigation.

This is now being carried out by chief conservator of forest (wildlife) DM Singh, who is looking into both the deaths of the elephant calves - which were found in drains at the tea estate - and two adults, including a pregnant female, who died in reserves close to the estate 'garden'.
