Pesticides And Bees

While the European Union, in a welcome move, has passed a two-year ban on neonicotinoids, a class of pesticides believed to be responsible for the decline in honeybee populations, the U.S. is taking an entirely different route. A report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency has stated that pesticides are not the only cause for the sudden collapse in honeybee populations in America. Instead, a combination of factors including a parasitic mite, several viruses and bacteria as well as genetics was cited as the cause. EPA's acting administrator Bob Perciasepe said, "The decline in honeybee health is a complex problem caused by a combination of stressors." While this may be true, it is also vital that the U.S.A. takes a strong stand against the use of pesticides.
