The rules, intended to reduce the generation of plastic waste and any risk of possible exposure to toxins, also prohibit the use of recycled or compostable plastics for storing, carrying, or packaging ready-to-eat, processed, or cooked food in any form.
The Central Pollution Control Board estimates that about 10,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated across India each day, accounting for 9 per cent of the nation's 1,20,000 tonnes daily output of municipal solid waste. Read the full report here.
