The past year saw a reduction in rhino poaching (17 deaths) from 2014 (27 deaths). However, eight rhinos have already been lost to poaching this year in Kaziranga National Park. Consequently, forest officials have been enforcing strict measures to prevent further rhino deaths. Following intelligence reports tracking the gang's activities and movement, forest guards were immediately dispatched to round up the three poachers.
This resulted in a face to face encounter. The poachers opened fire, which was reciprocated by the forest officials. While two poachers managed to escape, one poacher died in the firing. In all, 17 poachers have been arrested this year, making a significant dent in the nexus of trade in rhino parts.
