They eventually reached a consensus that developed countries (including Canada, the U.K. and the E.U.) would double the biodiversity-related international funds by 2015, on the basis of the average spending on biodiversity between 2006 and 2010. This amounts to roughly $12 billion. Additionally, discussions were held to increase domestic expenditure on biodiversity protection, classify marine areas on the basis of their ecological significance rather than political boundaries, and on the topic of synthetic biology (an advancement over genetically-modified technologies).
