Background
The tenth session of the Committee on Science and Technology met for three days in Changwon, from 11-13 October and took decisions that are under consideration by the Conference of the Parties. The CST is a subsidiary body of the Convention, which provides the technical scientific advice to the Parties.
Professor Antonio Magalhães, and the Chair of the Committee during the session and will serve as the Chair of the Bureau of the CST over the next two years wishes to present the outcomes of CST10 to the press. He will also speak about his vision and perspective about the work to be undertaken during his term as CST Chair, including in the preparations for the Rio Plus 20 Conference to be held in Brazil in June 2012.
The UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference on the Economic Assessment of Desertification, Sustainable Land Management and Resilience of Arid, Semi-Arid and Dry Sub-humid areas, will also take place during his tenure.

Desertification, along with climate change and the loss of biodiversity were identified as the greatest challenges to sustainable development during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Established in 1994, UNCCD is the sole legally binding international agreement linking environment, development and the promotion of healthy soils. The Convention's 194 signatory Parties work to alleviate poverty in the drylands, maintain and restore the land's productivity, and mitigate the effects of drought.
