The Uttarakhand state government's proposal to set up a thermal power plant close to Valley of Flowers National Park has set off an immediate reaction from Union Forest and Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh who has expressed serious reservation for starting this project, as it would be a threat to the eco fragile biodiversity of this region.
Ramesh's consultation with famed environmentalist Chandi Prasad Bhatt revealed that the proposed 23.4 MW power project to be set up in Bhuidar Valley is located at the very tip of Valley of Flowers National Park and hence will pose a threat to the survival of flora and fauna in the park
Valley of Flowers National Park located in high altitude Himalayan valley in upper Garhwal in Zanskar range is a World Heritage Site, filled with blossoms of various colours, hues and shades. 300 varieties of alpine flowers can be found here against the backdrop of snow capped mountains, a scene of outstanding beauty.
