Rhino and tiger found dead in the Kaziranga National Park

Ten to 12 poachers had entered the park through the northern fringe which faces the Brahmaputra River where they were intercepted by officials. Bhokte Chapori, a sand island on the Brahmaputra located between the Kaziranga and Golaghat wildlife division saw the worst of the firing.
The rhino carcass was found floating in a water body in the Bagori forest range and was missing its horn. The female tiger was found dead in Mikirjan in the Kohara range and an initial examination suggests poisoning as the cause of death. Kaziranga DFO D. D. Gogoi opined that the rhino might have died of old age but is awaiting test results. On September 19, 2009, a rhino and tiger were killed by poachers as well as a tusker. Since last November twelve tigers and six rhinos have died in the park.
