Should India do it alone?

Speaking about the upcoming UN Summit on Climate Change at Copenhagen, the Minister said, “India wants a fair and equitable agreement. There should be no barriers to its economic growth. We are deeply concerned about climate change. The best way to mitigate the problem is that countries should do things on their own. We are doing it and over the next two to three months, more countries will know what we are doing."

The minister acknowledged that some 15,000 Himalayan glaciers are receding, but said the cause is still in doubt. He singled out the Himalayan states of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttarakhand as in particular need of incentives for maintaining forest cover, and expressed hope that Delhi would concur with his recommendations.
