Sikkim Approves The First Wildlife Skywalk

It also includes a 22-km. long ropeway from the base at Mahadeo Than to the peak. The sanctuary, about 65 km. south from the capital city of Gangtok, is a popular tourist destination, and the skywalk is planned to increase eco-tourism in the area, while ensuring that encroachment in the temperate forest is prevented. The proposal had been rejected by the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) in 2010, as the state had sought seven hectares of the wildlife sanctuary land to be cleared for construction. However, the project will now take up a total of 2.1 ha. of sanctuary land, and though three members of the NBWL maintained reservations, the project has been accorded approval by the NBWL Standing Committee, chaired by Minister for Environment and Forests Jayanthi Natarajan.
