"We have asked the divisional forest officer of Berhampur to prepare a long-term plan to solve elephant menace," district collector Krishan Kumar said. He also visited some villages in Ganjam block ravaged by the wild animals, where the villagers had demanded an immediate solution to the elephant problem, forest officials said.

At least six persons have been killed, 20 wounded and several houses and standing crops destroyed by wild tuskers in Ganjam, Chhatrapur, Purushottampur and Khallikote blocks in the last three years. Twenty-five elephants are suspected to have migrated from Chanadaka forest and wreaking havoc on the area.

Since the last four days, people of Chhatrapur have been staging a dharna in front of the sub-collector's office demanding respite from the jumbo menace. Read the full report here.
