The team wagÂing a war against the mushÂroomÂing of therÂmal powÂer projÂects in Nellore disÂtrict subÂmitÂted a repÂreÂsenÂtaÂtion to the Union minÂisÂter for enviÂronÂment and forÂests (indeÂpendÂent charge), Ms Jayanthi Natarajan, at Delhi on Tuesday. The team led by the forÂmer minÂisÂter and TD disÂtrict unit presÂiÂdent, Mr Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy, demanÂded that the minÂisÂter order a comÂpreÂhenÂsive enviÂronÂment impact study and stop conÂstrucÂtion of all projÂects till the comÂpleÂtion of the study. Speaking to this newsÂpaÂper from Delhi, Mr Chandramohan Reddy said that the minÂisÂter gave a patient hearÂing when they met her on Tuesday eveÂning. “We told her about the seriÂous threat to the enviÂronÂment because of perÂmisÂsions being givÂen to varÂiÂous coal-based powÂer projÂects to proÂduce 34,000 mw of powÂer in the coastÂal area of Nellore disÂtrict. We also informed her that five projÂects have already comÂmenced conÂstrucÂtion works to proÂduce 16,500 mw. The danÂgers in store for the health of humans, agriÂculÂture secÂtor and catÂtle due to criss-crossÂing of high tenÂsion powÂer cables was also takÂen to her notice.
