Photo: Abhishek Yergude.Situated in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district, TATR is protected under Project Tiger along with 47 other tiger reserves. It is inhabited by more than 100 tigers that occupy the complete landscape.
According to the Cabinet Minister of Finance and Planning and Forest Department, Sudhir Mungantiwar, this is being conducted as an experiment and if successful, will be replicated in other parts of Maharashtra. Mungantiwar assured that the government is committed to protect wildlife and its habitats.
He further explained that the thermal cameras will be placed on an elevated structure such as a mast, which will rise to a significant height, fitted with solar panels to ensure continuous energy supply to the cameras for them to work 24X7.
The plan is to start with about 10 cameras that will cover a limited region of TATR. Based on the progression of the surveillance, more cameras will be added.
This new technology can help keep track of poachers and traps set up bt them . This project has been successful in Madhya Pradesh, and Mungantiwar wishes to reproduce it in Maharasthra.
