As part of the project, a check in the amount of US$75,000.00 was presented by Ambassador Li to the Honorable Michael Konelios, Minister of the Resources and Development for the cost of installation and administration for the project.
The handover ceremony was witnessed by the RMI President His Excellency Christopher J. Loeak, Hon. Speaker Donald Capelle, members of the Cabinet, members of the Nitijela, members of the Council of Iroij and other RMI Government officials.
The said Solar Streetlights Project is provided as an additional funding to the ROC (Taiwan) Annual Grant to the RMI, and is part of the continuous efforts by the ROC (Taiwan) to assist the RMI in developing solar energy to combat the adverse impact of climate change. Among other related efforts by the ROC (Taiwan) in the field of solar energy was the donation of 6,010 sets of solar lamps in December 2010, a US$200,000.00 project for helping outer-island students study at home. There are a few more solar energy projects in the pipeline.
The 115 solar streetlights will be installed in Majuro urban centers and communities to provide sufficient public lighting for the residents. The project is targeting areas with no streetlights as well as replacing non-operational existing streetlights with energy-efficient, reliable and cost-effective solar streetlights to enable pedestrians and vehicle owners to use the roads safely and also provide a safe environment for residents, in particular youths and women.

At today's handover ceremony, Ambassador Li reiterated the ROC (Taiwan) Government's commitment to the partnership between the ROC and the RMI. The people and the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) sincerely wish the solar streetlights and all the continuous efforts by the ROC (Taiwan) to assist the RMI in developing solar energy would contribute to the welfare of the people of the Marshall Islands.
