Jairam Ramesh (JR) now admits that he had to backtrack on environmental projects faster than a white-tailed deer in Sariska because of political pressure. JR is no superhero after all, but just another stage grabber.

 

In reality, JR does more flip flops than a hawai chappal. First, he cleared the Jaitapur N-Project; then threatened to ‘pause' it, going against his own government. Then JR's boss Manmohan Singh (all this time we thought it was Rahul) cleared the project on the 25th anniversary of Chernobyl. All we got was a shake of a salt-and-pepper bouffant and a permasulk. Agreed, the world is a stage and all are actors playing to the gallery; hence the Green Oscar goes to none other than Jairam Ramesh!

 

When JR thumbed his nose against America, refusing emission cuts before he went off to Cancun in 2010, he became an instant salon celebrity — after all who are they to tell us how to drive our Bimmers and Mercs — but our little green man came back and promptly reversed his statement. Was it because Newsweek called him the man who will save the world? When JR thundered against corporate imperialism in Orissa, defending the pagan gods of Niyamgiri, and his Master of The Universe applauded himself as “the tribal soldier in Delhi,"—few realised that ecopolitics had just made its debut in India.
