The rhino, one of India's and the world's most charismatic species, is under siege. In 2012 alone, Assam lost 21 rhinos, with the majority poached in and around Kaziranga National Park. The news is worse this year, with 12 rhinos slaughtered by the end of February.
At this rate, 60 rhinos could be lost this year in Assam alone. A revamped rhino defense force is in place in the state, but they will need the help of all levels of government, as well as conservationists and wildlife-loving citizens across India, and the world.
Sanctuary has teamed up with Avaaz, the global civic organization with over 20 million members world-wide that has won important victories for human rights, the climate, wildlife, animal rights, and more, on a petition to save India's rhinos. Sanctuary and Avaaz hope to collaborate on a major media campaign on behalf of the rhino, and take this effort to the Prime Minister's doorstep in an organized, direct action. The first step: a BIG show of public support for the rhino on the petition.
