The Mammals of Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh perhaps has the highest diversity of mammals among any Indian state (65 per cent of the total mammalian species found in the country).

This book is the first-ever checklist and systematic review of the rich and diverse mammalian fauna of this state and is the result of more than a decade-long field work by the author. Dr. Anwaruddin Choudhury, a member of several IUCN/SSC Specialist groups and the founder Chief Executive of The Rhino Foundation for nature in NE India has authored a number of papers and books related to northeast India. This book covers 241 species and subspecies and also has illustrations that will also be particularly useful for identification and an exhaustive bibliography.

Apart from the scientific and local names, details on the distribution are included along with relevant details on the species. It also indicates the conservation status of different species according to CITES, IUCN (2002) and the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972. Unknown to us, a number of species are often lost even before they are catalogued and as deforestation and poaching threaten the little-known sylvan forests of Arunachal, accurate identification of the fauna of this state is invaluable and with little published information on the mammals of Arunachal, this book is particularly relevant.
