And as the government steps up the flagging campaign to sell its carbon tax to voters, the Australian Council of Trade Unions has delivered its conditional support for the tax in exchange for a list of demands for workers and businesses in high-emission regions and industries.
Labor has faced an uphill battle to sell its carbon tax policy and hit a stumbling block last week when the Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott, seized comments made by the government's climate change adviser Professor Ross Garnaut, said the tax meant it was impossible to guarantee ''jobs will be protected''.
Mr Abbott said the statement ''confirmed what the Prime Minister is too ashamed to admit - that her carbon tax will wipe out jobs and decimate towns like Port Pirie and Whyalla'', two industrial towns in South Australia. Read the full report here.
